“Last year we studied spirituals and gospel songs in one of my poetry classes, so I took my class to a gospel presentation at a nearby African-American church. We came home singing, and the poetry took on new life."

The English department offers a variety of options, including:

At Dominican, English majors choose from among three concentrations. The basic course requirements are common to all concentrations. Students often choose their concentration based on their educational goals and what they want to do after graduation.

The concentrations include:

Coursework in the concentration in literature focuses on literary periods and genres, individual authors and special topics. Students study and analyze important works of literature in English from the 8th century to the present.

Students who choose the concentration in writing participate in writing workshops in addition to taking literature courses with other English majors. Many students publish works in The Eagle, the university’s literary magazine.

Writing concentration majors have a special requirement: In their final semester, they submit a portfolio of their writing for faculty review.

English Education

This concentration offers ideal preparation for students who plan a career in teaching. English Education coursework falls into three key areas:

  • Literary genres and periods
  • Methodology
  • Education

Competence in all these areas is required to earn teaching certification.

Certification requirements are complex, so students should seek advising help early in their university career. Prospective majors will also want to familiarize themselves with the School of Education's undergraduate website.

Degree with Distinction

Qualified students may apply in the fall of their junior year to Dominican’s Degree with Distinction program.

Degree with Distinction students work with faculty mentors to produce an original creative or critical work., which is reviewed by a university-wide committee. Students who successfully complete the requirements earn a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in English.
