Sr. Clemente passed away on December 19, 2017, at the age of 88, at St. Dominic Villa in Hazel Green, WI. She was surrounded by her Dominican Sisters who sang her home to the loving embrace of God. Sr. Clemente was a 1950 graduate of Rosary College. She taught on campus from 1970-2005 and then served as Professor Emerita of English. In 1973 and again in 1997, she was honored with Dominican’s Excellence in Teaching Award. She was particularly devoted to underrepresented students, organizing programs to mentor and support their success. The university’s annual diversity leadership award is named in her honor. In 2000, she was honored with the prestigious Caritas Veritas Award, which is presented each year to an alumna/us whose life reflects Dominican University’s motto, Caritas Veritas, a search for truth through charity or service. In addition to being a beloved teacher, Sr. Clem was also an accomplished scholar. She was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship as well as a Newberry Library-British Academy Fellowship for research. Her most recent book was A Journey in Love: Meditations on the Poem Piers Plowman (Marymount Institute Press, 2008). She will be remembered as a great mentor of not only her students but of her colleagues as well. Her holy and gracious friendship was a tremendous gift to the entire university community, and to the community beyond the campus gates as well. She moved to the St. Dominic Villa in 2016.
