Peer Advising

Peer Advisors are responsible for assisting new students in pre- and post- advising issues, making referrals, explaining MYDU and the online registration process, answering quick questions about Dominican University policies, and serving as a resource for first year students. Peer Advisors will provide support and outreach to new students throughout the year but mainly during the Fall Semester. Peer Advisors will also help new students review the course catalog, major requirements and course availability in preparation for a meeting with the Faculty Advisor in the Spring semester. In addition, Peer Advisors will also do outreach/retention to first year students via email, phone calls, and in-class presentations to the freshmen seminar. Finally, Peer Advisors will help build a sense of community among the students and the Peer Advising staff and to facilitate interaction between the students and Faculty Advisors. Peer Advisors will not take the place of faculty and professional advisors.

Responsibilities of the Peer Advisor include, but are not limited to:

  • To aid new students in the transition to higher education and to Dominican University.
  • Explain academic opportunities and procedures.
  • Have a clear understanding of the Core Curriculum.
  • Be punctual and dependable in carrying out all responsibilities.
  • Maintain and promote the university code of conduct and all university policies.
  • Facilitate interaction with new students. Engage all students in conversation and activities, including ice breakers and other activities. Meet either one-on-one or in a small group setting with each student at least once during the semester. (This can include any assistance provided to the small groups for their group projects.)
  • To refer students to appropriate on and off campus resources.
  • Serve as a role model of positive behavior, representing the University with pride and respect, in and out of the classroom.
  • To foster institutional pride and student empowerment.
